Rustic Canyon is recognized by multiple publications as one of the best golf courses in Southern California. It’s located in Moorpark, which is about an hour or so north of Los Angeles in Ventura County.
The area is pretty remote and seems to be desert so it was really hot. The grounds are nicely maintained but there are some brown spots, etc. It was a nice course and fun to play but I’m not sure if it really warrants a spot at the top of the various publications…but maybe I’m just missing something.
There is a nice practice range as well as a good putting green and short game area. These areas seems well maintained. There is a putting green to the right of the practice putting green but it’s actually the green for hole 18! This means that errant shots can go over to the putting area from players on hole 18 so heads up!
The course was pretty fun to play. It was challenging but wide. There are a few canyons and fenced out areas where you can lose your ball so bring plenty of balls if you tend to hook or slice a lot.
The carts are pretty new and have GPS monitors on them so that was nice.
I got a discounted hot rate on golfnow so I only paid around $80 for the round. For the price, I think it was a good deal.
The clubhouse and such are pretty sparse. I don’t think there is a locker room and the restaurant is small but fine for a quick snack or getting a drink.
The cart guys are nice and will fill a cooler with ice if requested.
This is a nice course if you’re not too far from the area. I booked on my own so I was placed with 3 other guys who were also playing for the first time at this course.
