Torrey Pines is definitely a bucket list type of course even though it’s technically a simple muni course. The folks in San Diego are so lucky to have the opportunity to play Torrey Pines as their local course! My friend set up this round and was able to book early as a San Diego resident. He also paid a green fee of around $50 but as a non-resident my rate was around $150.
This year’s US Open was held here and the Farmers Open is held every year at Torrey Pines.
When it’s not tournament time, they cut down all of the rough so there was pretty much no rough. I guess if the rough is too high, people spend more time looking for golf balls and it causes a slowdown, etc. Pace of play was pretty nice and fast.
We played North course which is shorter than South. The views were great though as the last few holes were right along the ocean. The fairways are fairly wide without many hazards or OB areas so I only lost 1 ball all day. There are a few canyons where you can lose a ball and I hooked my second hole driver out to the left and lost a ball. A few years ago, they moved things around so the front 9 is now the back 9, etc. I guess they wanted the ending to be with the ocean views.
The course is fun with lots of small hills. The greens were nice and well kept.
If I was a local, I would play probably Torrey every week.
