Tee Time: 17:47
Players: Mark, Joon, Albert
This was a bunch of firsts for me. First time playing with this group of people (dads from my kids’ school – although I did play with Mark before, it was my first time meeting and playing with Joon and Albert). First time playing night golf under lights. First time playing scramble.
Some golf courses in Korea have night golf. They have lights. This course used to be called Curo CC but I guess they golf sold a year or so ago and the new owners call it Loge Bien.
It is a 27 hole course with courses called loge, bien, and neo. Neo is the newest course and is not lighted so we played loge and bien.
We played a 4 vs 4 scramble with 4 other dads from my kids’ school. They tee’d off at 17:40 and we tee’d off at 17:47. This was also my first time meeting the other 4 dads.
My right ankle is still sore and swollen from twisting it on Saturday but it’s been ok on the golf course so no excuses.
I started out pretty strong on the driver. Mark is our long hitter so he would usually drive last so he can just blast one out there but he can be a little wild at times. I usually went first or second. Albert is also a pretty long hitter but is more wild than Mark. Joon was the most consistent so he would usually go first or second along with me.
Early on, I was really blasting some drives. I was hitting them a good 220-240m so really some of the best drives of my life. Mark would drive 240-260m though so we would usually use his drives. Albert was too wild early on. I was using a new swing that I’ve been playing with where I use my body (especially my left side and hip) and it was working well.
We started with a few pars and then got some birdies so we were at -3 but bogey’d hole 9 so we were at -2 at the turn. The other team was at +1 for awhile but they also birdied a hole so they were at 0 at the turn.
At the turn, there was a promotion where we get free fish cake soup so we had that. It was nice and warm for a cold night.
After the turn I couldn’t really find my driver swing again so I hit a few OB and then went back to my old swing. My old swing is consistent but doesn’t go as far so my drives were with Joon many times. We rarely used my drives but my second shot was decent and used that a few times and my putting started out terrible (short) but got better through the night.
We didn’t really run into any major danger but there was one hole early on in the second half (hole 10 or 11?) where I pushed one OB and then so did Joon. Mark hit a light pole (made a really loud noise which was kind of funny) so we were left with Albert. He really had to just punch one down the middle with a half swing but he took a full swing anyway and blasted one down the middle! He saved us! We walked over to his ball but actually found that Mark’s ball hit the light pole and bounced into the fairway so I guess we would have been ok anyway.
We were putting for birdie on pretty much every hole but none of them went in. We ended up par for every hole in the back 9. Other team also ended up with par so in the end we won -2 to 0…so by 2 strokes.
The bet was for the caddie fee so they paid our caddie fee!
A few random thoughts:
- Night golf was ok. I suppose it was fun but there were just weird shadows everywhere and the ball was a little difficult to see at times.
- It was cold because it was at night but bearable. I suppose it can be fun in the summer since it’s a little cooler at night.
- I got home at around midnight so it was a bit of a late night.
- Scramble was fun but lacks the course management skills, short game skills, etc. that makes real golf more fun and interesting to me.
Would I join this group and play again? Sure!
