I was able to book a last minute reservation at Spyglass Hill! I called the day before to try to book Pebble Beach but had no such luck. I asked if they had anything at Spyglass and they told me that they had a single opening for 1 at 9:10am so I took it! Spyglass is definitely a bucket list type of course for me so I was really excited to play!
In addition, because they had just completed aeration, they were offering a discounted rate from $415->$250 so that was great too! The greens were bumpy though even though it was day 8 after aeration. The fairways seemed fine overall though.
The course is absolutely beautiful. It’s a fairly difficult course though with many hazards and OB areas, etc. It’s not as hard as Korean courses though but it was a lot of fun.
There is a nice practice range where you can practice before your round. There are unlimited balls over there so feel free to warm up as much as you want. The guy managing the area was a pretty cool guy from Michigan.
My playing partners were pretty cool too! Mike was a local guy who knew the course well. His friend Dan was visiting from NY and was a decent player. Both were fellow Cal grads and cool guys. Matt was visiting from NY with his gf who let him go play golf for the day. Matt was pretty good even though he was just using rental clubs. Matt also mentioned that he had covid a few weeks ago and just recovered.
Mike and Dan got a caddie named Chris who was also really cool. He has been a caddie at Pebble and Spyglass for 23 years so he knew the course really well.
I felt bad because I wasn’t really playing very well. Mike, Dan, and Matt were all walking the course. Mike helped look for my ball a few times if it got lost in the woods. I had a cart so I just carted over. It’s cart path only though but oh well. It’s a little hilly in a few areas so it was nice having a cart. Matt didn’t have a caddy but he had a push cart so that was convenient as well.
